Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor (born 7 November 1996), officially known by her her stage name Lorde is a New Zealand singer-songwriter and record producer.Born in Takapuna and raised in Devonport , Aukland , she became interested in performing as a child.Lorde spent much of her early life working with Universal to develop her sound and artistic vision. She was spotted at the age of 12 by A&R scout Scott Maclachlan and later signed to Universal at the age of 13 and began working with songwriters at 14.
She choosed her stage name to be Lorde because she was fascinated with “royals and aristocracy”. However, she felt the name Lord was too masculine, thus she added an “e” to make it more feminine.She described her public image as coming “naturally” to her.
Her first EP “The Love Club EP ” was released in March 2013 with no major marketing or publicity, but it managed to land her at No. 1 on the New Zealand Album Chart. Single “Royals” simultaneously occupied the top spot in the singles chart – without so much as a video on YouTube. In August 2013, she became the first woman to top the Billboard Alternative Songs chart in the United States since Tracy Bonham did so in 1996.
In mid-2013, Lorde released her debut single “Royals “. It became an international crossover hit and made Lorde the youngest solo artist (and the only New Zealander) to achieve a US number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 since 1987. In late 2013, she released her debut studio album, Pure Herione The record topped the national charts in New Zealand and Australia and reached number three on the US Billboard 200.
In November 2013, Lorde was included in Time‘s list of the most influential teenagers in the world, with Mark Metcalfe from the publication commenting that she was “forging her own path”. In January 2014, Forbes placed Lorde on their “30 Under 30” list of young people “who are changing our world”She was the youngest individual to be featured on the list.In October of that year, Lorde was included in the list “The 25 Most Influential Teens of 2014” by Time.Featuring Lorde in its 6 September 2013 cover story, Billboard named Lorde “your new alt-rock heroine.
On January 2016 ,it was reported that Lorde and her boyfriend James Lowe have called it quits. This news was particularly shocking since the pair had been together for three years. Several sources have since come forward to then New Zealand Herald and shared that the Royals singer and the photographer put an end to their relationship towards the end of 2015.
Lorde released “Green Light” on March 3, 2017. Co-written by Lorde, Jack Antonoff andJoel Little, the electro-pop song was mainly inspired by Lorde’s first heartbreak. Released through Universal Music New Zealand, the song is the lead single off her upcoming sophomore album “Melodrama “, which is set to be released on June 16 , 2017.
